Description of the Rimonio trail
audio guide

As its etymology suggests - ‘Rivu Magno’ - “THE GREAT RIVER”, the stream Rimonio, one of the main streams in the area, has always been of great importance to the history of Fosciandora.

In the past, the Rimonio river was the state border between the Estense Duchy of Modena and Ferrara and the Republic of Lucca. As a matter of fact, from the 15th to the 18th century, when the Este family ruled over a large part of Garfagnana, the current municipality of Fosciandora was divided into two states: Ceserana, La Villa, Migliano and Fosciandora were Este; on the contrary Lupinaia, Riana and Treppignana were under the dominion of Lucca. Therefore, the expression "Attraverso il Rimonio" is also a way to create a bridge to help bring together groups of communities that in those centuries were divided. This division probably left its mark on subsequent history and social life.

On Fosciandora's side, the trail begins in Cavallaia, a nucleus of scattered houses, which together with "La Bora" and "Colletto" form an appendix to the village. From Cavallaia, which can be reached in a few minutes from Pucci Park, point no. 17 of the Tre Terre trail complex, the trail enters a charming wooded area for then reaching the bed of the Rimonio.

(A hearty recognition is due to Enrico Fiori who, on a voluntary basis, in recent years has rediscovered and cleared some stretches of the path from Fosciandora to Rimonio, that now is once again viable).
